From his studio in Evanston, Illinois he was one of the premier photographers of the North Shore from 1913 until his retirement in 1955. From time to time I will feature a different photograph or set of photographs by Toloff or other information about him I may uncover. <span style="font-size: large;">I was recently contacted by Faith G. who told me that she had purchased a Toloff photo in an antique shop in Crested Butte, Colorado in 1998. She was nice enough to agree to share it with us:</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxWVO6FAfPzsupBvrDZDt9pc17Pe2cjDG8pktrI5zyz1HyxkCXjPCGlE3ehKM7aA63ZiC4OcetNHOJUFWJ2StvyB17KVrEFP8S_Fvaduvr2MUDrDr1wvxIncp8M4JMigqJiaYadOmPqSXo/s1600/Toloff+pic-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxWVO6FAfPzsupBvrDZDt9pc17Pe2cjDG8pktrI5zyz1HyxkCXjPCGlE3ehKM7aA63ZiC4OcetNHOJUFWJ2StvyB17KVrEFP8S_Fvaduvr2MUDrDr1wvxIncp8M4JMigqJiaYadOmPqSXo/s640/Toloff+pic-1.jpg" width="438" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;">She says, <i>"I was so smitten by her-she intrigues me still. The woman, girl really, in the photo captured my attention the minute I walked into the shop-her eyes are haunting. It's as if she has lived a life well beyond her years. I would love to learn more."</i></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;">We know that Toloff only worked from his studios in Chicago, but his reputation was such that many people made appointments with Toloff to have their photos taken by him when they passed through Chicago.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;">So, can anyone identify or tell us anything about Toloff's "Woman from Crested Butte"? .</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">According to the 1937 Winnetka City Directory, Jack Egon Lederer lived at 474 Sheridan Road, in Winnetka. Jack was an immigrant from Czechosolvakia, and was a "women's apparel salesman." Very few women's apparel salesmen could afford a house like this. Lederer's obituary from 1972 said that he was vice president of The Rothmoor Corp., a clothing manufacturing firm, and that his wife Greta owned Greta Lederer, Inc., a house building company. They had two daughters, Jacqueline and Linda. </span></div>

Toloff <div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;">For this week's Toloff selection we will accompany him to the wedding of Martha Elisabeth Pape and Charles Joseph Bleidt on May 11, 1921. Charles was a widower but this was Martha's first marriage so they pulled out all the stops. And who better to memorialize the day than the premier photographer of the North Shore, J.D. Toloff:</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxxqnu3_v0WNVUqQnin4Aet5BtZDg8JEifhllf8GVIYim78xk9nXa_75ewaGeU0d1QJW2THBkMxFYBXvmGevIgFM8DSgUri_f2nOLZ5EjgngyHVSh-eXU9HLD-nZhi6pA2xcTGPC0OzZO_/s1600/MarthaPapeCharlesBleidt11May1921.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxxqnu3_v0WNVUqQnin4Aet5BtZDg8JEifhllf8GVIYim78xk9nXa_75ewaGeU0d1QJW2THBkMxFYBXvmGevIgFM8DSgUri_f2nOLZ5EjgngyHVSh-eXU9HLD-nZhi6pA2xcTGPC0OzZO_/s640/MarthaPapeCharlesBleidt11May1921.jpg" width="454" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">I think it is interesting that in so may of the "posed" photographs of the era there are ferns in the background. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>

<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Here's the bride in front of <u>two</u> fern arrangements:</span><br />
<br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Obviously there was a lot of money spent on this wedding, and everything had to be perfect. J.D. Toloff certainly did his part to make the day unforgettable.</span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;">How did things turn out for Charles and Martha? Pretty well, from the looks of it. They had two children: Mary Jane (1924-1965) and John (1929-1973). Charles died in 1959 at the age of 89; Martha died in 1981 at the age of 90.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Special thanks to Amanda Pape and Bill Parker for allowing me to use the Toloff photos of their family for this article. Amanda has a fascinating blog about her family that is a must-read for anyone interested in Evanston history. You can find it at:</div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Several weeks ago I featured J.D. Toloff's photos of noted dancer Ruth St. Denis as "The Peacock". In my writeup I mentioned that Ruth St. Denis was 1/2 of Denishawn. Denishawn was a School of Dancing and its Related Arts, and also a Dance Company. This week's Toloff feature is from the other 1/2 of Denishawn - Ted Shawn. Ted Shawn was, without a doubt, the greatest male dancer who ever lived. A short biography of Ted Shawn can be found here:</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ted_Shawn"><span style="font-size: large;">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ted_Shawn</span></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Here is a vintage advertisement for Denishawn (photos not by Toloff):</span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;">And here for your enjoyment from 1914 is Ted Shawn as the god '"Pan" by J.D. Toloff:</span></div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Ted Shawn as "Pan" by J.D. Toloff</td></tr>

<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">I have also seen the photo in black and white:</span><br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;">I don't know if Toloff added the tinting, or it was added by someone else.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"> </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;">The glory that was Denishawn lives on today at </span><span style="font-size: large;">Jacob's Pillow</span><span style="font-size: large;">, in Becket, Massachusetts, in the Berkshires. Jacob's Pillow is a dance school, retreat, and theater founded by Ted Shawn. There is a good writeup on Jacob's Pillow here:</span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;">J.D. Toloff has left us many fine examples of the versatility of his work. His photos are superb whether taken indoors or out. The man was truly an artist.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">I have mentioned before that J.D. Toloff photographed the famous, and "just plain folks". This week's selection fits in both of those categories: Charles Gates Dawes of Evanston, Illinois. Dawes was the Vice President of the United States (1925–1929) under President Calvin Coolidge. He was also the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1926. An excellent summation of the life and works of Charles Gates Dawes can be found here:</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;">(<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_G._Dawes">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_G._Dawes</a>)</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;">But to the people of Evanston, Illinois he was just another citizen who they saw on the street, at church or Evanston civic events. So it was not unexpected that Dawes should approach the "Photographer De Luxe for the North Shore" J.D. Toloff to have his portrait taken. Here is the result:</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0bwNRbO1eMvcet6cORsz9PDaHmP8aYqFhgC9rOlLQ-GWvPAJIIyGWywME0DtTj0vLgT6yZAsOENSgoOCLKGd-6NB_BKpqbof0O8Wp29Fwbhc2s7DIpY9Jgylk8g_5__v9H3Xivr3W1qyB/s1600/Charles_Dawes_1924+by+J.D.+Toloff.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0bwNRbO1eMvcet6cORsz9PDaHmP8aYqFhgC9rOlLQ-GWvPAJIIyGWywME0DtTj0vLgT6yZAsOENSgoOCLKGd-6NB_BKpqbof0O8Wp29Fwbhc2s7DIpY9Jgylk8g_5__v9H3Xivr3W1qyB/s640/Charles_Dawes_1924+by+J.D.+Toloff.jpg" width="474" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;">If you take a close look at the photo you can appreciate Toloff's photographic talents. Parts of the photo are soft focus, some are sharply clear. Part of Dawes' face is in shadow, part in a light that is almost harsh. But through it all, you are drawn to the sharp, non-wavering gaze of his piercing eyes.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Toloff has left us a piece of history, and a work of art.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">This week's selection is a little different from the Toloff works I have posted so far. In addition to photographing weddings and portraits of the citizens of the North Shore, Toloff also photographed the famous. Here are two photos of noted danseuse Ruth St. Denis from "The Peacock":</span></div>

<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">The Peacock Dance is based on an Indian legend of a woman who is turned into a peacock because of her extreme vanity.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Here is a brief biography of Ruth St. Denis from the Jacob's Pillow website (http://www.jacobspillow.org/):</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><span style="font-size: large;">A cigarette poster changed Ruth St. Denis' (1879-1968) life in 1906, an unlikely event which eventually altered the course of modern dance in America. She was then an eccentric showgirl named Ruth Dennis, touring through Buffalo in David Belasco's theater company. When she spotted an advertisement for Egyptian Deities in a Buffalo drugstore, the image of the goddess Iris conjured up the idea of a new kind of dance-theater which might tell the entire story of a civilization through movement.</span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><span style="font-size: large;">Within a few months, she had emerged as Ruth St. Denis in a solo concert on Broadway, inaugurating a decade of triumphs in various exotic dances fashioned from the folklore of Japan, China, and India. Although these dances sprang from a deep spirituality, St. Denis later confessed, "I knew that all the time I was dancing about God and Faith and the Spirit, most of the audience was only looking at my bare feet and my revealing costume." She was sketched by Rodin, courted by Stanford White, admired by Martha Graham (who would become her student) and pursued by Ted Shawn (who became both her partner and her husband).</span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><span style="font-size: large;">Any performance by "Miss Ruth" was distinguished by her remarkable stage presence. Her solos are difficult to reproduce, as they demand charisma, deft manipulation of costumes and props, and a profound belief in the mystical power of the dances. Through Denishawn (1914-1929), the company and school she founded with Ted Shawn, St. Denis made her greatest impact on audiences and on a generation of disciples including Martha Graham, Doris Humphrey and Charles Weidman. The visions stimulated by that cigarette poster were allowed to take shape in the elaborate spectacles staged by Denishawn.</span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><span style="font-size: large;">The dissolution of Denishawn led St. Denis deeper into her spiritual nature and into long periods of artistic oblivion, resulting in such desperate measures as working the graveyard shift in an aircraft factory. Her long life accommodated a number of declines and resurgences, with most of the latter supplied by Shawn through regular stints at Jacob's Pillow, beginning with a revival of Radha in 1941. She continued to dance well into her eighties, characterizing her later performances with an unusually modest self-assessment: "I move with remembered beauty." St. Denis died in 1968, and her portrait still hangs beside the proscenium in the Ted Shawn Theatre. </span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<span style="font-size: large;">This week's Toloff photo is another ebay find, which means that I know nothing about the subject of the photograph:</span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIHA2L1ZRmVnQVfeMUGqzaLgOQol3OesOWSENrU3Kza3mIUjqwaTBLDIOUQ64HMgzA0ct33yWNnjDsEKNeeyI1DTA9a7hnP31em1L19mUw6BvXh6Xa-zb5lViVxQ6aTDBWrNKn2uSXkVg-/s1600/Woman+with+lipstick.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIHA2L1ZRmVnQVfeMUGqzaLgOQol3OesOWSENrU3Kza3mIUjqwaTBLDIOUQ64HMgzA0ct33yWNnjDsEKNeeyI1DTA9a7hnP31em1L19mUw6BvXh6Xa-zb5lViVxQ6aTDBWrNKn2uSXkVg-/s640/Woman+with+lipstick.JPG" width="458" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;">The image is 5 3/4" x 7 3/4", and it is printed on a 10" x 13" heavy stock paper with a matte finish. The photo has been signed in the lower right corner by J.D. Toloff as was his custom.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Here is a closeup of the image:</span></div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;">From the makeup and hairdo of the subject, I would guess this photo was taken in the late 1940s or early 1950s. J.D. Toloff retired in 1955.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">As always, if you know anything more about the photo or the subject, please let me know.</span></div>

C.A. HEMPHILL, KENILWORTH, ILLINOIS by J.D. Toloff<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;">In 1937, J.D. Toloff was approached by noted North Shore home builder Clarence A. Hemphill, who was based in Evanston, Illinois. Hemphill had been told that Architecture and Design magazine was going to do a complete issue about Hemphill homes in suburban Chicagoland and since Hemphill wanted nothing but the best, he asked J.D. Toloff to do the photography for the magazine. Toloff was delighted.</span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">The result was Archiecture and Design magazine (Volume I, No. 2): </span><br />

Toloff<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;">This week's Toloff selection is another photograph of a private individual, but unlike last week's entry, we know who the subject of this week's photo is. Her name is Martha Elisabeth Pape, and she lived in Evanston, Illinois. She decided to have a formal photo taken - perhaps for a beau? - so she went for a sitting with the premier photographer of the North Shore, J.D. Toloff. The person who provided these photos said that they were taken around 1916, so Toloff would have been in his studio at 1623 Orrington Avenue.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Toloff often advertised that he would take photos "On your grounds" but it is obvious that these photos were taken in his studio in front of an artificial backdrop - looks like a tapestry. So, here are the two photos of Martha by J.D. Toloff:</span></div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;">These photos are just as crisp and beautiful as new, although they were taken almost one hundred years ago.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Martha must have liked the results because she used Toloff again as a photographer - this time for her wedding. However, we'll save those photos for another time.</span></div>

Toloff<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;">As the fame of Joseph D. Toloff as a photographer grew, the demand for his services increased as well. There are many institutions of higher education along the North Shore and from the beginning Toloff was asked to do some of the photography for yearbooks from Roycemore School in Evanston all the way up to Barat College in Lake Forest. But Toloff had the longest relationship with Northwestern University in Evanston. Through the teens into the twenties Toloff's contributions to the Northwestern yearbook (called "The Syllabus") increased every year. In 1920 Toloff was named the official photographer for the Evanston departments of Northwestern:</span></div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;">In 1922 the university asked Toloff to provide photos for a section of the yearbook they were calling "Some Campus Views". They suggested that Toloff stroll around the beautiful and historic Evanston campus of Northwestern and photograph anything he found to be of interest. The result is sixteen sepia photos which Toloff chose as the ones he found most interesting. Here they are for your enjoyment:</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">On the back of each of the photos is written "Wanda Carlyle in 'The Tavern", Geo. M. Cohan Theatre." <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Unfortunately, that's where the trail ends for Wanda Carlyle. I couldn't find any further mention of her, and the 1920 Census for New York does not list anyone named Wanda Carlyle. Perhaps that was her stage name.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;">The photographs are labelled "Toloff Chicago" unlike the usual "J.D. Toloff Evanston". Toloff's obituary mentioned that at one time he had a studio at 410 S. Michigan avenue in Chicago, which is the Fine Arts Building (and is still standing today):</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large; text-align: left;">So all we have today of Wanda Carlyle are a few mentions in a data base of Broadway performers. Luckily for us Joseph Toloff also preserved her for posterity.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: right;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Joseph David Toloff was born April 24, 1888. Sometimes he said he was born in Bialystock, sometimes in Grodno. Borders meant little in those days; a town might be part of Russia, Poland, Lithuania, or some other country depending on the year. Although the towns stayed in the same place, the countries they belonged to kept changing. When Toloff filled out a census form, his country of origin changed - sometimes it was Poland, sometimes it was Russia. Today Grodno is a major city in Belarus, and Bialystock is in Poland. When J.D. Toloff was born, this area was heavily Jewish. Approx. 1/2 of the 50,000 population of Grodno was Jewish; 63% of Bialystock's 66,000 population was Jewish. On Toloff's immigration papers, he listed his nationality as "Hebrew." </span><br />

<div style="orphans: auto; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0px; widows: auto;">
<div style="margin: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">The family name was originally "TOŁOCZKO" but there is no Ł in Latin/French/English so it became Toloczko. As a Russian citizen his family name in Russian must have been "ТОЛОЧКО".</span></div>
</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Joseph emigrated to the United States on December 19, 1908 when he was twenty-one years old. He arrived at Ellis Island on the SS Scharnhorst, sailing from Bremen, Germany on December 5, 1908. Here is his entry from the ship's manifest:</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;"> </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">He is listed as "Josef Tolotschko." He was 21 years old, was a photographer, and had been living in Bialystock "Russia". His father's name was David Tolotschko. New York was his final destination. He had paid for his own passage. He had never been in the US before. He was going to his cousin Itzel Levin's who lived at 12 Jefferson Street in New York. He swore that he was not a polygamist nor an anarchist, and that both his physical and mental health was good. He could both read and write. He was single. He had $12.00 with him. He had never been in prison or an almshouse. He was not crippled or deformed. He had a fair complexion, was 5 feet 7 inches tall with black hair and brown eyes. His body had no identifying marks. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">The 1910 Census shows him as "Joseph Toloff" living in Philadelphia and working at his craft of photography. He said his occupation was photographer in a "Picture Parlor". His native tongue was Yiddish, but he was also fluent in English. He said that he had emigrated in 1900 and that he was a naturalized citizen (neither of which was true). He was living as a boarder at 410 South Ninth Street, in Philadelphia. He said years later that his big break came when he began working for "Mr. (Elias) Goldensky of Philadelphia who is without question one of the most able and versatile photographers in America."</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">J.D. Toloff came to Evanston, Illinois in 1913. By the time Toloff registered for the Draft on June 5, 1917 he was both living and working in Evanston. He was living at 616 Hinman Avenue,</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">He mentioned on his registration form that he was the sole support of both his mother and his father, but war was war, and that did not keep him out of the Service. He enlisted in the United States naval reserves as chief instructor of a school of serial photography to be established at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">From the Bulletin of Photography magazine of February 4, 1920:</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><i>Miss Helen Weingarten and Joseph D. Toloff were married on January 27th at the Hotel La Salle, Chicago, Illinois. After the ceremony they left for a trip to Atlantic City and New York.</i></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">J.D. Toloff photographed everyone from the famous to the ordinary. He photographed noted Evanston resident Vice President Charles Gates Dawes. From the world of dance he photographed Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn (Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn were the founders of the world-famous Denishawn Dancers). He photographed the greats from the stage such as Wanda Carlyle.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">He also did the usual commercial photography of weddings, portraits, etc. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">As his reputation grew, Joseph Toloff was contacted by local schools to do their yearbook photography. I have seen Toloff photos in the yearbooks from Roycemore School in Evanston, all the way up the North Shore to Barat College in Lake Forest, but Toloff did his most consistent work for the yearbook of Northwestern University in Evanston - "The Syllabus". </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">In 1925 Toloff decided to move his studio from Orrington Avenue in Evanston to 518 Davis Street.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Studio Light Magazine, the Eastman Kodak magazine for professional photographers from May, 1925 featured Toloff and his new studio.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">And in 1935 the Toloffs relocated to the Hotel Pearson, Chicago.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">In 1955, after being in business in Evanston for more than forty years, Joseph Toloff decided to retire. His brother Lester had retired to Miami, Florida (although he died in 1952) so Joseph decided to move south and get away from the harsh Chicago winters, once and for all. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Less than two years into his retirement, the Chicago Daily Tribune from March, 1957 carried the sad news of the death of Joseph Toloff:</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpQX0R9w2k7pyG-LsOZPhyphenhyphen59tiN6HUd9RKSR5TJNgg5AvaX5n622LSqmVO-gMTYDMqUElrhQ6MEq4KFQwMk8dFo_ElU0La0J6u305HsxNQ1_LXK8fMiRa54WquvDpYLxmWMoxHYJ6rQ2VR/s1600/Toloff+Obit.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpQX0R9w2k7pyG-LsOZPhyphenhyphen59tiN6HUd9RKSR5TJNgg5AvaX5n622LSqmVO-gMTYDMqUElrhQ6MEq4KFQwMk8dFo_ElU0La0J6u305HsxNQ1_LXK8fMiRa54WquvDpYLxmWMoxHYJ6rQ2VR/s400/Toloff+Obit.jpg" width="262" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Although Toloff's only living relative was still back in Evanston, he was buried in the military graveyard in Andersonville, Georgia. It is amazing that, after all these years, Toloff's sister, Helen Toloff Ray was still living at 616 Hinman in Evanston. Here is a photo of Joseph Toloff's grave:</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">It is also interesting that Joseph's sister Helen is listed as his next-of-kin. What happened to his wife Helen? I don't know. After the 1940 census I can't find a trace of Helen Weingarten Toloff.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">So, that's the story of noted Evanston photographer Joseph D. Toloff - a man who photographed history. As I was working on this story I wondered what became of all of Toloff's negatives? Can you imagine what a treasure trove that would be for a historian? Toloff was the premier photographer of Evanston from 1913 to 1955. Joseph and Helen had no children, so perhaps the negatives went to other relatives or, as often happened, maybe they were just thrown out. If anyone knows what became of Toloff's negatives I would be very interested in finding out.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">Joseph David Toloff - a man who probably knew more about Evanston and Evanstonians than any other person of his era. The Evanston photographer de luxe for the North Shore - may he rest in peace.</span> </span></div>
